Diagnostic Studies
Diagnostic Studies : (Pet CT)
Cardiac PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) is an advanced imaging technique used to assess heart function and detect various cardiac conditions. It combines two imaging modalities—PET and CT—to provide detailed, high-resolution images of the heart and surrounding tissues. Here’s a breakdown of the two components:
PET (Positron Emission Tomography):
PET scans provide information about the metabolic activity of tissues. For cardiac PET, a small amount of radioactive tracer (usually a form of glucose or a perfusion agent like rubidium or nitrogen) is injected into the bloodstream. The PET scanner detects the radiation emitted by the tracer and creates images that show how well blood is flowing through the heart and whether there are areas with reduced blood supply, which could indicate issues like coronary artery disease or ischemia (lack of oxygen to the heart).CT (Computed Tomography):
CT scans use X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. When combined with PET, CT helps to localize the areas of abnormal metabolic activity detected by the PET scan. This allows for more accurate anatomical imaging, helping to pinpoint exactly where any issues, such as blockages in coronary arteries or heart structure abnormalities, are located.
Applications:
Benefits:
Procedure: The patient will be asked to lie on a scanning table, and the radioactive tracer is injected intravenously. After a waiting period to allow the tracer to circulate, the PET and CT scans are performed. The entire process usually takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour.In summary, cardiac PET/CT is a powerful imaging tool that helps healthcare providers assess heart health with high precision by combining functional and anatomical data. It is often used for diagnosing coronary artery disease, evaluating heart function, and guiding treatment decisions.
